The Stochastic Mystery Hotline – Bekk Wells
In a world characterized by unpredictability, we seek to impose some kind of order on our surroundings. We are drawn to the mysterious and the unknown in the hope of discovering reasonable explanations. Some mysteries can be satisfactorily resolved. Others cannot.
A meditation on technology, media, narratives and the unknown, The Stochastic Mystery Hotline is centred around a telephone located inside the CASA main gallery. Occasionally the phone will ring. You can choose to answer it. In the meantime, you are invited to spend time in the gallery space.
This exhibition is a conceptual experiment that will unfold through space and time. It extends beyond the confines of the gallery. It contains mysteries that can and cannot be solved. It presents opportunities for what Richard Feynman calls ‘the pleasure of finding things out.’
Bekk Wells is an artist based in Lethbridge, Alberta. He has a BSc. in Chemistry from the University of Lethbridge where he also studied art, and a MA in Art and Science from Central St. Martins. His projects tend towards the participatory and the site-specific and often explore the process by which we convert experience into knowledge.
