Explore the fundamentals of textile surface design through repetitive patterns with printmaking methods. Use geometric and organic mark-making to understand concepts of balance, proportion, shape, rhythm, and composition. Participants will apply these principles by block printing onto a tote bag, deepening the understanding of pattern repetition, spatial relationships, and depth. Next, focus on the relationship between colour and form to create dynamic imagery on a tea-towel. Using cut-paper stencils, participants will create colour-blocked areas that are layered with textures and imagery from pre-prepared screens. Take these techniques beyond this workshop to custom print fabrics that you can sew into anything you like!
