1000 Ways to Fall in Love with a City – A Strudelbrand Curatorial Project

1000 Ways to Fall in Love with a City – A Strudelbrand Curatorial Project

Opening Reception: Saturday, September 6, 7pm – 9pm

“We are all artists. Some of us just haven’t realized it yet”

Born from the belief that everyone has creativity within them, STRUDELBRAND’s artistic practice shifts the focus back onto the viewer, with an open invitation to participate in their hyper-local, Interactive Art Experiments.

STRUDELBRAND’s work prioritizes connection, intrigue and whimsy. Through a combination of online and real-life activities and initiatives, the STRUDELBRAND experiment encourages viewers to notice the small beauties of everyday life and, by doing so, deepen their connection to their community.

Spectators are openly invited to engage with the work in whichever way they feel most comfortable – either as viewers or as active participants. By providing open opportunities to any, STRUDELBRAND’s Interactive Art Experiments develop organically and reflect the current state of the city, evolving over time.

(RE)SURFACE: Lethbridge through the eyes of an artist

The (RE)SURFACE project is a multi-part series based on creative (re)imaginings of Lethbridge – a collaborative work between STRUDELBRAND and local artists. This project began with enlarged photographs of existing “blank spaces” around the city. These photographs of recognizable “canvases” – from concrete underpasses to familiar brick walls were then (re)surfaced by local artists, based on the prompt: “if you had this canvas to just create whatever you wanted, what would you put here?”

(RE)SURFACE aims to democratize public art as a means of community storytelling, without any restrictions on theme, practical feasibility or traditional bureaucracy. The concept that everyone walks throughout this world viewing their reality through a different lens has always been intriguing. Perspective is, afterall, everything. Sharing these “lenses” with the community reveals how much creativity truly lurks within the population and encourages others to temporarily “see” the world through someone else’s eyes.

This project is an ever-evolving film and series of artworks, with Pt. 1 completed in 2023 and Pt. 2 currently underway.

(RE)SURFACE, Pt. 1 is a short cinematic film that explores how public art can bring people together. It follows the story of how STRUDELBRAND, a grassroots, interactive art experiment works with local artists to turn an ordinary city into a vibrant public art installation. The film inspires viewers to see the potential for beauty and creativity in unexpected places and to take action to transform their own communities. It premiered Friday, April 21st, 2023 in Lethbridge.

(RE)SURFACE, Pt. 2 will premiere at a red carpet film screening, free to the public, in 2026.
