Aeolian Code – Ezra Saunders
Aeolian Code – Ezra Saunders
Aeolian Code explores intricate sand and water ripple patterns shaped by the wind, tides, and storms. The pieces translate temporary fluid landscapes into solid forms, documenting the sensory experiences of two shifting natural environments. Aeolian Code begins with two photographs: one taken in Zion, Utah, and the other at Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park in British Columbia. In Zion, sudden afternoon storms envelop the desert, creating shallow puddles on top of sand dunes that evaporate rapidly. As quickly as the storms begin, they vanish, leaving behind textured patterns in the sand as the only reminder of their brief existence. Even those will soon be swept away by the wind. At Rathtrevor, dramatic tidal ranges create a constantly evolving relationship to the ground. One moment, kelp drifts through deep, dark water, and the next, the tide recedes to reveal the hidden life of the rocks below.
Like all built and natural environments, these ones are constantly undergoing transformation. These two changing landscapes are dramatically noticeable to the human eye because of their rapid rate of change. Aeolian Code invites you to experience evaporative landscapes in a static state and engage with the evolving natural processes that shape them.
In Aeolian Code, depth maps from photographs, parametric modeling, CNC-milled upcycled Corian, and laser cut homemade bioplastics are used to translate the sensory experiences of wind and water-related change into solid forms.
