Beading With My Grandmothers – Tanya Lujan-Wadsworth

Tanya Lujan-Wadsworth is a multidisciplinary artist from Kainai and Tsuutina Nation. Tanya’s art practices includes; beading, photography, painting and sewing. Her primary focus has been centered around beadwork which she was taught at a young age by her maternal grandmother Louise Big Plume from Tsuut’ina Nation. Tanya’s beadwork is influenced by her cultural heritage which consists of Tsuut’ina, Blackfoot and Cree.

Her beadwork has been showcased at the Santa Fe Indian market for the past two years.

When creating her artwork, Tanya uses her traditional knowledge and skill, but also takes into consideration what her buyers want such as materials, colours, and style.

Tanya’s beadwork practice continues to evolve as she explores themes based on her cultural identity and life experiences. She believes in passing on her artistic skills to her grandchildren as her grandmother had done so for her.
