Billy McCarroll – Folds

My recent work has utilized collage as a starting point for the paintings.  The collages are from my library of art catalogues and books.  In the series “Notations” the primary source was a book by John Cage.  Composers were asked to submit music notations and text, and these submissions included normal notations and a variety of shapes & text to be interpreted musically.  The collage then acts as a starting point for the painting.  The series “Aftermath” and “Cover Up” utilize a similar approach.  Additional materials include Japanese origami paper, cardboard, music notation, pastel, and acrylic.  In the series “Folds” shapes come from photographs of folded paper airplanes, with the addition of some of the above materials.

Born in Santa Barbara, Billy McCarroll received his BA in visual arts from California State University.  In 1969, McCarroll completed his MA at California State University, and two years later joined the Department of Art at the University of Lethbridge.  McCarroll taught printmaking, drawing and painting from 1971 to 1996, and was director/curator at the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery from 1972 to 1981.  A member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, McCarroll has shown extensively, with solo exhibitions at the Glenbow, Memorial University Gallery in Newfoundland, Appleton Museum in Florida, the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Jarvis Hall Gallery in Calgary, and the Trianon Gallery to name a few.  He is represented in public collections including the Canada Council, Canadian Embassy Collection, Glenbow Museum, Alberta Foundation for the Arts, University of Calgary, Nickel Art Gallery, Memorial University, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the University of Lethbridge, and private collections across Canada and the US.  McCarroll lives in Lethbridge, where he actively continues his practice.
