Lethbridge Arts Days 2022 – Artists at Work

Arts Days 2022 is fast approaching! Art activities, events, tours, exhibitions and performers September 22-30. Keep your eyes peeled for more details and events as we draw closer to the event!

The Allied Arts Council presents Artists at Work, installations by current Artists in Residence Mao Projects and Shantael Sleight. The residence will be installing their work in the Artist Kiosk on Rotary Square Friday September 23 and 24th.

Mao Projects

Mao Projects is the collaborative art practice between Mao Kun Chen and Chris Savage. The artists combine their different cultural backgrounds to create work representing their shared aesthetic and philosophical viewpoints. Primarily focusing on functional and sculptural ceramic works, both artists use colourful glazes and graphic drawings to create a harmony between their diverse backgrounds.

Mao and Chris met while completing their Masters of Fine Arts Degrees at the University of Calgary in 2017. The artists and, now, life partners began collaborating in their home studio in Calgary in the summer of 2020. Combining their different cultural backgrounds, Mao being born and raised in China and Chris having grown up on the unceded Coast Salish Territory of the Lekwungen and W̱SÁNEĆ nation known as Victoria BC, the artists look to create works that reflect upon their individual and shared perspectives. They have attended residencies together in Canada and have exhibited collaborative works within Canada and Asia.

Shantael Sleight

Shantael’s practice explores the relationship between cycles in nature, and our own human experiences. With interest in pushing the limits of her painting practice and connecting with the community, Shantael will spend her residency creating a series of figure paintings.

Shantael Sleight is a painter based in Victoria, BC. Since completing her BFA in 2002 from the Alberta University of the Arts, she has maintained a studio practice
and has exhibited publicly and privately. Shantael’s artwork focuses on the human experience instantiated in nature, exploring themes of ephemerality, impermanence, and nuance.
