Self-schema – Tia Bunnage

September 10 – October 23, 2021
Opening Reception: September 25, 7pm – 9pm
Please note the opening celebration for this exhibition will be September 25 at 7:00pm during Arts Days

Tia’s work explores themes of personal identity – the ways in which her self-perception and sense of self-change and transform, her love of the natural world, and philosophical notions of colour, the self, religion, and iconography. These works examine how the artist wishes to be perceived by society; how she wears a social “mask” that displays only an idealized version of herself. She highlights certain aspects of herself, altering them to fit an aesthetic or accentuating them to emphasize a kind of beauty. The work does not necessarily seek to critique or analyze societal beauty standards as a whole, but rather examines her personal ideas and feelings of self and the person she presents to the world.

Tia is an emerging multidisciplinary artist currently residing in Lethbridge, Alberta. By enrolling herself in various art classes throughout her youth, she developed a passion for creating art. Tia has completed 2.5 years in the Fine Art’s studio program at the University of Lethbridge. In her practice, she is committed to challenging herself by exploring different mediums. Her artistic influences include pop culture, contemporary high fashion, and Superflat, a postmodern art movement inspired by Japanese graphic art and animation.
