Serenity – Donna Bilyk

Serenity – Donna Bilyk

Exhibition Opening November 12, 7pm – 9pm

“The state of being calm, peaceful, and untroubled.”

This is what I felt on a warm summer’s day back in the summer of 2017.

The weather was perfect, no wind and the sun was shining as we made our way up the mountain. All along the way stopping to marvel at the beauty, from the tiniest flower to the broad vista that surrounded us on all sides. Fresh mountain air filled our lungs with each stride forward.

The reward that lie ahead was Window Mountain Lake, a beautiful clear water lake surrounded by mountain tops. Beauty was all round as we continued our hike around the lake stopping along the way to gaze down at the water to see what we could through its clearness. The shiny rocks that reflected back at us, a glimpse of a fish as it swam past, the pretty little wild flowers all along the way. Then there was me stopping to document everything with my camera, gazing through the lens from time to time to compose an image that would capture the beauty and serenity of this special place.

I hope this body of work will somehow transport you to a place of serenity.

Born and raised in Saskatoon, SK, Donna Bilyk knew from an early age that her passion in life was the creation of art. Married with 5 children, Donna has moved around Western Canada, and since 1995 has owned and operated Artist’s Touch, which specializes in Custom Picture Framing, Photography and Fine Art.

After completing her Bachelor of Fine Arts, with Great Distinction, at the University of Lethbridge in 2011, Donna came full circle and enrolled in the Master of Fine Arts program at the University of Saskatchewan. Defending her master’s thesis 6 months early, Donna convocated in June, 2013. She has had the opportunity to participate in numerous solo and group exhibition and her works are held in both private and corporate collections.

Her practice incorporates a multi-disciplinary approach, working in oils, acrylic, charcoal, photography and sculpture. She is inspired by Impressionist artists such as Degas and Manet for their use of light, brushwork and strong compositional elements. Contemporary artists such as Gehard Richter, Jennifer Bartlett and Sara Hughes have formed a diverse assemblage to draw upon.
