Sun Fathers, Moon Mothers – Amy Gaulin

Sun Fathers, Moon Mothers – Amy Gaulin

Opening Reception: Saturday, September 6, 7pm – 9pm

Following the loss of my father, I became interested in observing life cycles in nature, including that of a dandelion outside my studio window. As it bloomed into a burst of yellow petals, it mirrored the brilliance of the sun. It captured the essence of my father, his bright playful energy, a steady and nourishing light. I recorded the dandelion’s growth in my sketchbook until the day it was eaten. I felt the loss of its life, then was filled with an overwhelming peace in recognition that the dandelion had become nourishment for other life.

As I started drawing the neighbouring dandelion, it began to open. A dandelion puff ball emerged as I watched in awe and recorded. Its silky round form mirrored the moon. It captured the essence of my mother, her soft glow and welcoming comfort, a guide through cycles and waves of emotion, reminding me of the endless beauty to be found.

My parents as well as the many father and mother figures in my world are represented in Sun Fathers, Moon Mothers through imagery of celestial beings, dandelions, trees, and animals. These works honour parents, the love shared between them, and the sparks of life they create when they come together.
