TAROT 22/7 – The Material Girls Collective

Tarot means something different to everyone. Typically taking the form of cards, tarot decks or oracle decks are used for divination, managing stress, playing, imagining, creating community, and much more. Each person encodes their own personal meaning into tarot as an existing object, drawing from their own symbolisms as well as collectively agreed upon meanings. The Material Girls Collective created their own original 22 cards using their own systems and cosmologies of meaning and significance. Each of the tarot decks were made with different meanings in mind. There are themes of plants, treasure chests, moths, fantasy/ roleplaying, animals in pop culture, rocks and creation, personal emotions, and our own ideas of what tarot cards mean. Each of the decks are a reflection of what is important to the artist that created them; a reflection of who we are and what we value.

The Material Girls Collective is made up of students at the University of Lethbridge from the Fall 2023 Senior Studio course: Vienna Lang, Kaitlyn Marynowski, Kyla Organ, Gabrielle Peters, Bree Potuzak, Natassya Shanmugaraja, Serene Weasel Traveller. The first project for the group brought the 7 artists together to explore the ideas of tarot, based on their own perceptions of self.
