The Bold Prairie – Shelly Lloyd

The Bold Prairie – Shelly Lloyd

I have had the privilege of living and painting here in southern Alberta all of my adult life. I have an immense love of the prairies and the Western way of life. In my younger years I had the privilege of owning and training horses and they are a frequent subject of my artwork. The changes that come everywhere also affect prairie life and I find the disappearance of the grain elevators heart wrenching and they often find their way into my work.  In my paintings I try to convey the vastness and diversity of prairie life.

I started to draw as a little girl of three. My mother says that she would have me redraw pictures for my dad when he got home from work because he couldn’t believe I could draw so well. As the years passed I went through reams and reams of typing paper drawing animals of every sort and description especially my favourite, the horse. I took every art course offered in high school and was offered a scholarship at graduation. I had to turn down the scholarship due to circumstances beyond my control. In 1988-89 when correspondence courses were still offered I took an art course from Northlight Art called “The Fine Art of Painting and Drawing.”  The textbook used with the course was “Creative Drawing and Painting” by Brian Bagnall. I work in acrylics and oils as well as watercolour.
