Objects. Stuff. Things. Humans interact with objects. In industrialized capitalist cultures, the acceleration of object production and consumption has produced enormous problems of waste. The urgency of the global environmental crisis makes this ‘object dilemma’ increasingly disturbing. As individual aging humans, we prepare for death. Instructions must be left for the disposal of both the body and the accumulated objects.
In considering my own waste dilemma, I have questioned the possibility of ‘upcycling’ and repurposing objects as art. Still, I know that my remaking only delays their inevitable destiny: the landfill. My art making creates a purgatory of sorts. These objects are waiting. There is the possibility of afterlife or not. In the meantime, what can be done with them? What can they do? Do they have stories to tell?
Dagmar Dahle, a visual artist and writer who lives and works in Lethbridge, Alberta, has exhibited widely in Canada and Europe, including at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Lethbridge (2006, 2012); Moose Jaw Museum and Art Gallery (2008); Stride Gallery, Calgary (2009); L’endroit Indiqué, Montreal (2016); Château des Portes, Mainsat, France (2017); and in 2011-12, she was part of the touring group exhibition, Animal, curated by Corinna Ghaznavi.
