Opening Reception: Saturday, November 8, 2025, 7pm – 9pm
My art practice is rooted in the wonder of nature, ideas of beauty, and the movement of the body as it navigates the sculptural landscapes and environments I create. Horses, birds, starfish, dogs, landscapes, flowers, and bees have figured prominently in my sculptural installations. If I were asked to describe my work in two words, I would say “excessive minimalism”.
I often use multiples of small objects as the material from which large-scale installations are fabricated. Utilizing repetition, placement, rhythm, and movement, I endeavour to create sculptural works that engage imagination, memory, and emotion. Works that are approachable yet challenging, layered, and multifaceted. I choose iconography that people can immediately identify with, as they find connections through remembered experience. My work resonates with my audience as they walk around, under, or upon the installations.
Landscape is an important theme. For example, in Stella Mere, cast metal starfish sculpt the curvaceous landscape of the Oldman River Valley. In Migratory Paths, a mass of hanging golden birds captures the movement of a murmuration. In my current work in progress, Portrait of the Eastern Slopes, I am using 20,000 shards of coloured glass to depict the majestic profile of the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains, particularly the western side of the Livingstone Range. Additionally, the installation Flowers is comprised of over four thousand translucent, paper-thin porcelain flowers piled upon a low, narrow light table. On the wall behind this glowing tableau is a video of honeybees feverishly gathering pollen from the delicate spring blossoms of cherry trees.
Born in Edmonton, Alberta I grew up running wild in the North Saskatchewan River Valley, and the neighbouring farm fields, municipal dumps, and gravel pits of Beverly Heights. I received a Diploma from GMCC, 1983 and a BFA from NSCAD in 1985. In 1989, I accepted a position at the University of Lethbridge where I worked as the Facilities Manager, Art Studios, till 2016. I live and work in Lethbridge, maintaining strong ties to the university and art community. After 30 plus years, I continue to make art because I can’t stop exclaiming to myself or friends “can you imagine …”
