A palimpsest is a writing material that has been used and reused, its previous marks erased or overwritten, yet never entirely disappearing. Faint traces remain beneath the new, revealing the layers of what came before.
In my body of work Palimpsest, I explore the layering and erasure of marks through printmaking and walking as a way of considering how identity, beliefs, and culture are shaped by the world we inhabit, especially when living between and within multiple cultures at once. I am interested in how the people and places around us continually leave their impressions, creating layers that alter, obscure, or reveal what came before. Identity, like a palimpsest, is never fixed; it is continuously being written, erased, and rewritten through our experiences.
To create these works, I attached drypoint plates (sheets of specialized plastic) to the soles of my shoes and travelled between my physical homes by walking, taking public transit, flying, and driving. As I moved through different environments, the plates collected marks from the spaces I passed through, recording fragments of each journey onto my moving body.
The process mirrors printmaking itself; the spaces I travel through become the plate, my weight and movement become the press, and my body becomes the paper receiving the impressions. Each journey leaves something behind, while simultaneously carrying traces of what came before. Through this process, I consider how I am continually shaped and reshaped by the people, places, and in-betweens I have the privilege to exist with and within.
Camille Eudes is originally from Lethbridge, Alberta, and is currently based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Her French cultural upbringing and experiences moving between Canadian and French cultures inform a practice that explores identity, belonging, place, and movement. She received her BFA from the University of Lethbridge in 2025 and is currently completing her MFA at Emily Carr University of Art and Design.
