Residual Systems – Barbara Bordalejo
Residual Systems brings together linocuts and collages that combine images with pages from dictionaries, encyclopedias, and other discarded books. The works explore how systems persist beyond their moment of use. Obsolete technologies appear alongside fragments of language and thought, bringing different systems for recording, defining, and transmitting knowledge into contact with one another. Newer works extend this investigation to the relationship between image and underlying text to consider how cultural ideas are imposed, inhabited, and contested. Across the exhibition, obsolescence is understood not as disappearance, but as transformation: the persistence of materials, meanings, and ideas after the systems that produced them have changed.
Barbara Bordalejo is a Lethbridge-based artist, writer, and scholar whose work explores text, memory, materiality, and technology. Born in Argentina and raised in Venezuela, she studied drawing and mixed media at the Academie in Leuven, Belgium, and has pursued printmaking since 2015.
Working primarily with linocut, collage, and found printed matter, Bordalejo draws on her longstanding engagement with books and the material transmission of knowledge. Her work combines images with discarded texts to explore how meaning is preserved, transformed, and recovered. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing and doctorates in English and Middle English.
