The all-black Story Robe explores grief, resilience, and power through dark times. The use of black represents moments of loss, mourning, uncertainty, and the weight that comes with moving through difficult experiences. At the same time, the darkness becomes a place of strength, creating space to reflect, heal, and grow.

Rooted in Blackfoot visual language and the tradition of the Story Robe, the work reflects a continued connection to the land, culture, and community. The robe becomes a personal record of experiences that cannot always be expressed through words, holding stories of loss while also acknowledging the strength that comes from carrying them forward.

The all-black surface represents the darkness that can surround periods of grief, but it also creates a space where new growth can emerge. Through this work I explores the relationship between loss and growth, recognizing that resilience does not mean leaving grief behind, but learning to carry it while remaining connected to culture, land, and community.

The Story Robe becomes both a reflection and a source of power and a way of honouring what has been lost while continuing to move forward. Through the darkness, there is still connection, memory, growth, and the strength to continue.

Zoe Buckskin is an art student at the Univerity of Lethbridge.  She is a Blackfoot artist working in mixed media, blending traditional Blackfoot art with contemporary materials and approaches. Her work is rooted in her relationship to the land, expressed through organic forms and artifact-like qualities. She draws on traditional patterns, colours, materials, and techniques inspired by Blackfoot artifacts.
