KABOOM! POP ART For Post Apocalyptic Damage Control & The Altered Timeline – Len Komanac

The work I am showing consists of large-sized comic book styled panels with graphic elements of halftone dot patterns, thick black out-lines and saturated colours. These works are frozen moments of theatrical melodrama, blending mid-20th century pulp aesthetics, textures of acrylic paint and ironic dialog.

I like to use the interplay of rigid acrylic paint layers, magnified halftone dots, and flat painted colours to serve as a deliberate critique of mass media consumption. These technical choices attempt to strip away organic brushstrokes to reflect the automated aesthetics of commercial printing.

For quite some time I have viewed art production as being akin to as well as an opposite that of factory efficiency.  I try to maintain a productive pace and work daily in order to satisfy my own demand to execute the works that lie in between the points of creativity.

By framing heavy existential panic within a bright, “cheap” comic format, I use humour as a shield for vulnerability. It forces a smile while exposing how modern culture packages deep human anxiety into disposable entertainment.

Born in a lean-to and raised by wolves in the Alps, Len was introduced to art through cave paintings and some old comic books he found in a haunted house. When he assumed human form (i.e.: adulthood) he left his underworld tribe and made the long journey across the Atlantic ice shelf to Canada. Along this journey he learned English from vampire polar bears and learned the mysterious ways of pop art from the ghost of Andy Warhol.

Len later attended the University of Lethbridge, graduating with a Fine Arts degree after failing out of Math, Geology, Pre-Med, Psychology, Sociology, Physical Education, Business Administration and even Drama. Making all sorts of art is like a wonderful buffet for him, just not as edible.

For the safety of others and himself Len often works under the moniker Dr. Strangelen.
