Mourning Dove – Isabel Kelly
What does the presence of specific birds (or lack thereof) tell you about a time and place? What can the wear and tear at the knees in heavy-duty jeans tell you about the person wearing them? My themes live within the answers to such questions, and those answers often take the form of narratives.
Each of my works have components of storytelling to be found in their details. How can objects reveal their stories, moments, actions, through their environments, forms, and gestures? By evaluating what is visible to us, we can piece together narratives of what life has to share in its details. Some of my works are visual interpretations of an existing story; in other pieces, I create narrative through their materials, methods, and embellishments. My art is object-based mixed media. My some of favorite mediums of making include textiles, digital sculpting, 3D printing, and painting. I enjoy experimenting with new processes to see how they might be incorporated into my work. I am currently learning the kinetic artistic method of automata in the hopes of applying it to my Graduate Thesis.
