Maatsii kiistaakii (Pretty Offerings) – Ty Wadsworth
My artwork is a part of me. It is a reflection of me, my skill, my culture, and my family. When I create my artwork, I select everything I use with care. I believe it is important to do your very best, have patience and respect when you are creating something for someone. The various items that I have selected to be a part of this exhibition represent my vast skills and knowledge that I have spent my life working to attain through watching, listening and practicing. Many of the items selected took a great deal of time and effort to create and I am proud to share them. I have always been inspired by my family but especially my grandmother who spent her life creating art and was able to help support her family because of it. I believe by continuing to create art that I am making her, my family and my nations proud by keeping our culture and knowledge alive.
Ty Wadsworth is a Niisitapi/Blackfoot artist from the Kainai and Tsuut’ina nations. Wadswoth’s art practice is influenced by his cultural upbring and his knowledge of traditional art from both Blackfoot and Tsuut’ina. From a young age Wadsworth grew up watching his family create traditional art from materials such as hides, cloths, beads, quills and feathers. At the age of 15 Wadswoth began to create his own regalia used for pow wow events. Using his skills and knowledge that he gained from his years of helping his uncles, aunties and other family members, he started to focus on designing traditional styles of art such as war bonnets, weapons, bags, moccasins and adornments. Wadsworth gets his inspiration from archival photos of Blackfoot and Tsuut’ina people as well as his family and community. Through his art practice he stives to keep his culture alive by teaching people and sharing his knowledge.
