Between the Sidewalk and the Horizon – Kellen Spencer

Between the Sidewalk and the Horizon is an ongoing series of artworks that examines residential housing construction, memory and the notion of home. What started as a short documentative series of photographs in the neighborhood of Mount Pleasant, Calgary, became a fascination with housing politics in Canada and the narratives each of us carry around these subjects. The series includes black and white photographs, pencil drawings and copperplate etchings.

Sky Palace – Craig Talbot

“Many years ago, in the year 2021, the sacred trees were emancipated from humankind. The people of the Sky Palace re-planted the trees to create a new healthy planet where the people of Earth could have a chance to redeem themselves for poisoning the sacred trees. Some of the trees were taken to the Temple of the Sacred Tree to perform an important duty: They were to be a reminder of the past and a promise to the future to never let the Earth suffer again. Over time, the Earth returned to it’s previous  state.  Thanks to the people of the Sky Palace, humans now live in a lush paradise free of war, famine and disease.” This is just a glimpse of the narrative I created as the foundation for the work in this exhibition. I hope to reach the viewer in a way that makes them think about life and their role in it. I also want to express my feelings about the environment.

Diary of Earthly Things – Leah Koutroumanos

Through a painting practice focused on representation and mimetic rendering, my work addresses illusive moments of everyday experience. By aesthetically assessing my domestic space, I have developed a body of watercolour paintings that depict isolated subjects, such as residual objects and fragments. Referring to the genre of still life and trompe-l’oeil, my small format compositions are descriptive, precise and diaristic. A testimony to the lived experience, painting from life produces nuance and ambiguity which challenges the search for truth, and any notion of realism. My work is an anthropological investigation which explores the fundamentally human attachment to the material world. The relevance of this is emphasized by the social circumstances of the pandemic in which these paintings have been conceptualized.

Objects for Empaths

Tanya Doody has been combining handmade objects and performance in her practice since 2010. Professionally trained in traditional craft processes, she places value in the handmade and the buildup of tacit knowledge in the handling of material(s) over time. The connection of materials and objects to bodies and gestures is the basis of her performance art practice.

After Us

Dagmar Dahle, a visual artist and writer who lives and works in Lethbridge, Alberta, has exhibited widely in Canada and Europe, including at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Lethbridge (2006, 2012); Moose Jaw Museum and Art Gallery (2008); Stride Gallery, Calgary (2009); L’endroit Indiqué, Montreal (2016); Château des Portes, Mainsat, France (2017); and in 2011-12, she was part of the touring group exhibition, Animal, curated by Corinna Ghaznavi.

Cloud Cover

Andrew Rabyniuk is a multidisciplinary artist and writer. He has exhibited in group and solo exhibitions across the country. From 2017 – 2019 he co-organized events and exhibitions as a member of Trap/door Artist-run Centre, a local non-profit initiative dedicated to the promotion of contemporary visual art in Lethbridge. He has received support from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the Canada Council for the Arts.

Resilience

Oshan Ford is a self-taught abstract artist and hatter who grew up in Southern Alberta and now resides in Lethbridge Alberta. Oshan is a founding member of the Guerrilla Art Collective, a diverse group of Lethbridge artists who have hosted multiple shows since 2018. Her most recent artistic endeavor has been becoming a hatter and you can find her busy either making large scale canvas art or making hats in her studio shop.
